Hainault Lodge was built in 1851 at the time of Disafforestation of Hainault Forest.
Frederick Green J.P one time High Sheriff of Essex re built the Lodge in the 1880’S
During the second war it housed officers from the Fairlop Airfield
After the war the house became Annex of Oldchurch Hospital.
It then remained derelict for 7 years.
Then it was finally demolished in 1973
Site was acquired by the L B R in 1986 and enthusiastic Volunteers from Havering and Redbridge Wildlife and Countryside Group began to manage the site in partnership with the Borough Nature Conservation Section
It was the first Nature Reserve in L B R to be designated after consultation with the English Nature
It was officially opened by Mayor Councillor Barden in 1995
Today a nature Trail has been constructed which allows visits from School parties though the reserve
