ARISTOTLE THE GREEK PHILOSOPHER
Aristotle was Greek philospher from 384 to 328 BC. He was born in Stagira in Thrace he studied in Athens, became tutor to Alexander the Great. He also opened his own school in the Lyceum in Athens. It is known as ‘Peripatetic School’. When Alexander died, Aristotle was forced to flee to Chalcis where he died. He wrote many books about physics, poetry, zoology, logic, government and biology.
Aristotle, along with Plato and Socraties, is generally concered one of most influencial Ancient Greek pholospher in Western thought. He was great pholospher
who advocated the reason and moderation. Aristotle maintaind that sence experience is our only source of knowledgeand that by reasoning we can discover
the essence of things, that is , their distinguishing qualities. In his works on Ethics
and Politics, he suggested that human happiness consists in living conforminty
with nature. Aristotle believes that Ethical knowledge is not certain knowledge, but it is general knowledge. If a person become virtuous they have to do virtuous activity. He explains if everything was done with good intention, the ultimate goal he called the highest good.
In the middle ages,Aristotle’s philosophy first became the Islamic philosophy, and then incoporated into Christain theology. It was largley throughly the Arab and Jewish Scholars that Aristotelian thought was reintroduced in the West. Medieval Scholars tendid to accept his wast output without any question. Aristotle held that all matter consisted of a single ‘Prime matter’ which was always determind by some form. The simlpest kinds of matter were the four elements earth, water, air, and fire. These four elements interchange, while aether is not its own. The sun keeps this cycle going. God keeps the Sun going thus Sun is eternal
Happiness is not found in pleasure or only fame or honour. The human function is to do what makes it human, be good at what sets it apart from every thing else. A Person that does this is the happiest, because they are fulfilling their purpous or nature is found in ratioanl soul. The principal of life he termed a soul, which he regared as the form of living creature not as subtance seprable form of it. Infact he believed can discover in sence impressions the universal, and since the soul thus trancends the matter, it must be immortal.
