Pre 1945 children living in Hainault area went to the Fairlop Upper School in Fencepiece Road, which was built in August 1933 there were
Upper Boys, Upper Girls, juniors sections.
The Junior and Infants Sections are still on this site.
The Senior Sections now houses the Redbridge Music School in the John Savage Centre.With the building of the new Hainault Estate, with a vast amount of housing, schools were needed in the area, which was covered by Essex County Council and the Boroughs of Dagenham and Ilford.
Upper Schools
Grange School was one of the first to be built, in Manford Way by Essex CC, with a purpose built Youth Centre, for the 14- 20 age group, for social and recreation in the evenings. It opened in February in 1947 and closed in 1982, when it amalgamated with Kingswood School and became Hainault High School.
Mr.Edmonds, father of Noel Edmonds, DJ and later TV presenter, was Headmaster at the Grange School from 1967 until 1980.
Kingswood Upper School was built by the Dagenham Council in Harbourer Road, which opened in September 1951. Prior to this, children were bussed to neighbouring schools in Dagenham.
Jimmy Greaves, the former England International Footballer, was among the first intake at the school.
Bob Crow, present General Secretary of the NUT (National Union of Transport) attended the school until the age of sixteen.
A purpose built Youth Centre was also provided on this site for social and recreational activities for 14-20 year olds. Between 1968 and 1992 a large number of young people from the Centre obtained Duke of Edinburgh award.
The South West area of the original Hainault boundaries continued to go to the Ilford Schools.
Fairlop Upper School
Fairlop Upper School, as it was named, was built in Fencepiece Road in 1933. There were separate sections for boys and girls.These are now named The John Savage Centre which includes The Redbridge Music Centre.
The Fairlop School was relocated to a newly built School for Boys and Girls in Forest Road. This is now named The King Solomon School.
Lower Schools
Manford Way County Primary School was opened in November 1948 in Manford Way. By May 1952 the junior school had 468 pupils and the infants school 320 pupils.
St.Anthony’s Roman Catholic School was established at Woodman Path in September 1952 for mixed Junior and Infants, and in November 1952 had 344 pupils.
Coppice County Primary School, in Manford Way, opened an infants department in September 1952. The Junior department opened in 1953. These came under the Dagenham Council.
Grange Hill County Primary School was a temporary school opened in February 1948, in Woodman Path. In May1952 there were 888 pupils at the school. The site now has houses on it.
John Bramston Primary School was opened in 1945, for the Ilford Council school children.
All the schools came under the newly formed London Borough of Redbridge in 1965.
